In keeping with my promise to use this space as a means of keeping in touch, it seems only right that I should date a post and say something about the fact that Sam and I were married on 29 July, even if I’m writing it on our 1-month anniversary.
In many ways it was not a particularly unusual day. Just the two of us, figuring it out as we went along, visiting a place we had never been before, and doing something we had never done before. Equally typical, we found ourselves in a little art gallery on a European old town square like so many others. But this time we were joined by a marriage registrar and two volunteer witnesses that I found in the square outside a few minutes before our appointment time.

In our minds this was very much a correction of the legal record. We had already each been living one half of the same life for nearly 30 years. Whilst I don’t think either of us would look back call it the happiest day of our lives or anything like that, it was a genuinely fun thing to look into each other’s eyes and say silly things, and sign our names in a big leather-bound book.
So, now we have an anniversary to try to remember. Month 1 and I’ve succeeded so maybe that’s a good sign!
